St Maelrhys' Church

St Maelrhys' Church
 - Eglwys Maelrhys Sant

St Maelrhys' Church is situated at Llanfaelrhys, 2 miles from Aberdaron. Its remote location draws those looking for retreat.
There is a Sunday service at 2pm, usually Evening Prayer.

Maelrhys was the son of Gwyddno ab Emyr Llydaw. He was the cousin of both Cadfan and Hywyn and came to Wales with them from Brittany. His small church is sited above Porth Ysgo and is solitary and peaceful. Maelrhys' name has caused some speculation and one story tells of a man named Rhys, who came from South Wales. During a famine, he landed a cargo of flour near Aberdaron, which he sold from a place called Blawdty (flour house). He made a good return on his flour, but, the story tells, he saw that the people around Blawdty had no place in which to worship and so he used the profit to help construct a small church.
Another story tells of two young men who broke into St aelrhys' Church to steal anything of value. As they made their escape, they crossed the Parish boundary. Immediately they were turned to stone for their crime. The stones were called Lladron Maelrhys (Maelrhys' thieves), but their location is unknown.
There is also mention of a Well associated with St Maelrhys, 'at some distance from the church', but this is not featured on current maps.

Mab Gwyddno ab Emyr Lydaw oedd Maelrhys. 'Roedd yn gefnder i Cadfan ac i Hywyn, a daeth i Gymru, gyda hwy o Lydaw. LleoIwyd ei eglwys fechan uwchben Porth Ysgo, ar ei phen ei hun mewn lle tawel. Bu peth damcaniaethu ynglyn a'r enw Maelrhys, ac y mae un stori, fod dyn o'r enw Rhys, brodor o Dde Cymru, yn ystod cyfnod o newyn, wedi glanio llwyth o flawd yn ymyl Aberdaron, a'i werthu o ie o'r enw Blawdty. Gwnaeth elw da o'i werthiant, ond fel y dywed y stori, sylweddolodd nad oedd gan y bobl o gwmpas Blawdty ie i addoli, felly defnyddiodd yr elw i adeilady Eglwys fechan.
Dywed stori arall am ddau lanc ifanc, a dorrodd i mewn i Eglwys Maelrhys Sant, i ddwyn unrhyw beth o werth. Fel yr oeddynt yn dianc, croesodd y ddau ffin Plwyf. Yn y fan, trowyd y ddau yn gerrig, am eu trosedd.Enwyd y cerrig y Lladron Maelrhys, ond mae eu lleoliad yn ddirgelwch.
MMae yna sôn hefyd am ffynnon yn gysylltiedig a Maelrhys Sant, ychydig bellter oddiwrth yr Eglwys, ond ni ddangosir hi ar y mapiau cyfredol.
